India Mobilizes Operation Brahma for Earthquake Relief in Myanmar

India has initiated Operation Brahma to assist Myanmar following a 7.7-magnitude earthquake that resulted in over 1,000 deaths. The operation includes the deployment of relief materials, a search and rescue team, and a military field hospital. Prime Minister Modi expressed solidarity with Myanmar, and the Indian embassy is actively coordinating efforts to ensure effective delivery of aid.

India has initiated Operation Brahma, mobilizing armed forces to deliver relief materials and deploy a search and rescue team in response to the catastrophic 7.7-magnitude earthquake in Myanmar that resulted in over 1,000 fatalities. This mission aims to assist victims and support the rebuilding process. Following the quake, the Indian government promptly placed its armed services and the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) on standby to facilitate emergency response actions.

The Indian Air Force (IAF) commenced the operation by dispatching a transport aircraft laden with 15 tonnes of vital relief supplies, including food and medical aid, from Hindon airbase to Yangon. By 7:30 PM Indian time, a second aircraft transported an NDRF team to the capital Naypyidaw. This team, the first foreign rescue unit to arrive, is set to assist in Mandalay, the area most severely impacted by the earthquake.

External Affairs Ministry spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal emphasized the significance of the mission, stating that naming it Operation Brahma underscores India’s commitment to aiding Myanmar’s recovery efforts. Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed condolences to Myanmar’s military leader, reaffirming India’s role as a supportive neighbor while reiterating the assistance being provided.

Specialized urban search and rescue teams, equipped with essential tools and canine units, are expected to be instrumental in locating survivors in Mandalay. NDRF Deputy Inspector General Mohsen Shahedi highlighted the urgency of the situation, indicating that the team will be most active within the first 24 to 48 hours following the earthquake.

Moreover, an 118-member field hospital has been dispatched from Agra, featuring medical professionals and equipment vital for addressing the emergency healthcare needs of those affected. This field hospital is similar to the one previously deployed to Türkiye earlier this year under Operation Dost.

In addition, naval support is being coordinated with two warships setting sail to deliver about 50 tonnes of relief materials from Indian ports to Myanmar. The earthquake had devastating effects, especially in Mandalay, where over 1,000 fatalities have been reported, necessitating prompt humanitarian action.

India’s proactive approach to disaster relief stems from its extensive experience and capabilities, having successfully responded to various humanitarian crises in the past. The Indian embassy in Myanmar is currently ensuring the efficient distribution of assistance while maintaining contact with the Indian diaspora residing in the affected areas, whose safety remains a priority.

In summary, India has launched Operation Brahma to provide urgent humanitarian assistance to Myanmar following a devastating earthquake. The operation includes the deployment of relief materials, search and rescue teams, and a fully equipped field hospital. The Indian government remains committed to supporting Myanmar during this crisis, affirming its role as a responsible neighbor and a first responder in disaster scenarios. Coordination through the Indian embassy and the assistance of armed forces underscores India’s dedication to international humanitarian efforts and solidarity with affected communities.
