Putin Acknowledges Global Leaders’ Efforts for Ukraine Ceasefire

Russian President Vladimir Putin thanked global leaders, including PM Modi and President Trump, for their focus on the Ukraine conflict and the proposed 30-day ceasefire plan. Modi emphasized India’s stance for peace and dialogue, while concerns regarding ceasefire execution were raised. The conflict has caused immense devastation since its escalation in February 2022.

On Thursday, Russian President Vladimir Putin commented on Washington’s proposed 30-day ceasefire in Ukraine, expressing thanks to U.S. President Donald Trump and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, among others, for their focus on the conflict. Putin appreciated the attention given by global leaders, stating, “…many state leaders… devote a lot of time to this issue, and we are thankful to them because it’s all for the noble cause of stopping hostilities and preventing human casualties.”

During a recent meeting with Trump, PM Modi emphasized that “India is not neutral” regarding the Russia-Ukraine conflict and advocates for peace. He communicated to Putin that “this is not the era of war” and expressed support for Trump’s efforts. Modi has had multiple discussions with both Putin and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky since the onset of the conflict in February 2022.

The United States has urged Russia to accept the ceasefire proposal unconditionally. Although Putin indicated support for the ceasefire, he noted “there are nuances” and expressed concerns about its execution.

Trump responded positively to Putin’s remarks, describing them as “promising” yet incomplete when addressing the media while meeting NATO Chief Mark Rutte. Following discussions in Saudi Arabia, Ukraine agreed to the U.S.-backed 30-day ceasefire plan amid escalating pressures from the U.S., following their recent confrontational meeting in the Oval Office on February 28.

The conflict, which began with Russia’s extensive invasion in February 2022, has resulted in severe casualties, displacement of millions, and destruction of cities, marking the most significant tension between Moscow and the West in decades.

In summary, President Putin acknowledged the involvement of global leaders in addressing the Ukraine crisis, particularly praising President Trump and Prime Minister Modi. Prime Minister Modi reaffirmed India’s commitment to peace, underscoring that this is not the era of war, while both leaders addressed the ongoing push for a ceasefire in the conflict. The situation remains precarious, with significant implications for international relations.
