Tragic Suicide in Unnao: Family Alleges Blackmail and Police Inaction

Altaf, a tailor from Unnao, died by suicide in Thane after being blackmailed by a woman from an affair. Despite family efforts to seek police assistance, they encountered jurisdictional disputes as Altaf faced threats and demands for money before his tragic end. This incident underscores serious issues of emotional abuse and negligence in protective response systems.

In Unnao district, Uttar Pradesh, a tragic incident unfolded as Altaf, a tailor, took his own life in Thane, reportedly due to blackmail from a woman with whom he had an extramarital affair. His family claims that after discovering the affair, they urged him to return home following his mother’s demise, hoping for a fresh start. However, the woman continued to torment him with threats, alleging pregnancy and demanding money, which ultimately led him to end his life.

In distressing videos recorded prior to his death, Altaf depicted his torment, stating, “I will finish myself in this way. I have lived long enough. No more.” Following his death, his sister Reshma expressed concern over the police’s inaction, claiming they were shifting responsibility between jurisdictions. Despite attempting to file a complaint against the woman, the family’s efforts were stymied as police directed them back and forth, failing to take significant action in the case.

In his final moments, Altaf’s anguish became painfully apparent in the footage, where he declared, “I am not doing drama. I am in pain. You don’t understand it.” In the videos, he was seen inflicting harm upon himself and consuming poison as he indicated he wanted his family to know the pain he endured. Reshma noted that the woman continued to assert her innocence post-incident, indicating a disregard for the consequences of her actions in Altaf’s life, claiming, “It is not my fault.”

The family has since expressed their frustration, noting that they only learned of Altaf’s death four days later from the Maharashtra police. The distressing circumstances surrounding Altaf’s demise highlight the serious implications of emotional and psychological abuse, calling attention to the need for immediate intervention in similar situations.

The tragic death of Altaf not only highlights the devastating effects of emotional abuse and blackmail but also raises significant concerns regarding the effectiveness of the policing system. His family’s attempts to seek help were met with bureaucratic obstacles, showcasing a pressing need for better protective measures for individuals facing such adversities. This case serves as a somber reminder of the importance of mental health awareness and supportive resources for those in crisis.
