On Sunday, the National Investigation Agency (NIA) apprehended Gagandeep Singh, also known as Goldie, from the Tilak Nagar area of New Delhi. He is accused of trafficking individuals to the United States via the notorious ‘dunki’ route. The investigation highlights the alarming issue of organized human trafficking, particularly involving agents exploiting desperate individuals seeking illegal immigration.
The victim, a resident of Tarn Taran district in Punjab, was trafficked to the United States in December 2024, having reportedly paid ₹45 lakh to Goldie. Following his deportation back to India by U.S. authorities last month, the victim lodged a complaint against the accused, prompting NIA involvement in the case originally reported by Punjab Police.
The NIA’s investigation disclosed that Goldie lacked the necessary licenses or permits for international immigration. He utilized the ‘dunki’ route, which included passage through Spain, Salvador, Guatemala, and Mexico, to facilitate the victim’s journey. Reports indicate that Goldie’s associates mistreated the victim during the trip, even robbing him of cash.
As of January 2025, the United States has deported 388 Indian nationals classified as illegal immigrants, with 333 individuals returning directly to Amritsar on special flights. The Punjab Police has initiated a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to delve deeper into these trafficking networks and has filed numerous cases related to this issue.
The NIA is collaborating with law enforcement agencies in the U.S. and Canada to gather intelligence regarding agents residing in those countries. Separately, the Enforcement Directorate is investigating illegal immigration routes taken by Indians, specifically focusing on those using student visas. Minister S. Jaishankar informed Parliament that aside from the 388 deportees, there are an additional 295 individuals held in custody by U.S. authorities awaiting removal.
