On a recent Friday, Myanmar’s military authorities reported a devastating earthquake resulting in 144 fatalities and 732 injuries, with expectations of increased numbers. The earthquake, measured at a magnitude of 7.7, was recorded near Mandalay at approximately 12:50 p.m. local time, originating from a depth of about 10 kilometers. An additional quake of magnitude 6.7 occurred roughly 10 minutes later.
Military leader General Min Aung Hlaing disclosed in a televised address that 96 out of the 144 casualties occurred in Naypyitaw, the capital city. Fatalities have also been confirmed in other regions, including Sagaing in the northwest. In Thailand, the earthquake resulted in the deaths of at least five individuals and injuries to 17 others, following the collapse of a high-rise construction project in Bangkok.
Rescue efforts are currently underway to locate approximately 100 individuals believed to be trapped within the debris. Deputy Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul visited the affected site on Friday night, announcing that public buildings would undergo thorough safety inspections, while private structures would also be encouraged to assess their safety.
