India is sending 80 NDRF personnel to Myanmar for earthquake relief under ‘Operation Brahma’. The team will provide rescue support with specialized equipment, including the use of rescue dogs. India has also dispatched 15 tonnes of relief materials and Prime Minister Modi has expressed readiness to assist Myanmar.
India is deploying a contingent of 80 personnel from the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) to assist in relief and rescue operations following a devastating earthquake in Myanmar. This deployment, referred to as ‘Operation Brahma,’ includes specialized quake rescue equipment, such as concrete cutters and drill machines, to aid in the emergency efforts.
The NDRF team is being airlifted to Myanmar via two sorties from Hindon, Ghaziabad, and is expected to arrive by Saturday evening. The operation is under the leadership of Commandant P K Tiwary from the 8th NDRF Battalion, who will head the Urban Search and Rescue (USAR) operations. Additionally, the team is bringing rescue dogs to facilitate search efforts for individuals trapped in collapsed structures, adhering to standards set by the International Search and Rescue Advisory Group (INSARAG).
On Friday, the region, including Myanmar and neighboring Thailand, experienced a high-intensity earthquake that resulted in significant devastation, with reports indicating at least 1,002 fatalities in Myanmar alone. India has previously engaged in similar deployments during earthquakes, including those in Nepal in 2015 and Turkiye in 2023.
In a show of solidarity, India dispatched approximately 15 tonnes of relief materials to Yangon, Myanmar, using a C130J military transport aircraft. Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed concern for the victims and confirmed that India is prepared to extend all necessary assistance to both affected countries. India shares a border of 1,643 kilometers with Myanmar, highlighting the importance of this humanitarian support.
