Takano stated that the motive for the attack was an alleged unpaid debt from Sato. This confrontation stemmed from a financial dispute, as Takano had previously approached the Tochigi Prefectural Police in January 2024 regarding Sato’s refusal to repay borrowed funds.
Reports indicate that Takano had transferred over ¥2 million (approximately $13,520) to Sato from 2022 onward, ostensibly to assist with her living expenses and cell phone bills, allegedly borrowing this money from consumer finance companies. “She continued to not repay me, so I decided to attack,” Takano reportedly told investigators, underscoring the acrimony related to the financial disagreement.
Sato was known for her livestreaming activities on the app WhoWatch, where she had garnered viewers since at least December 2021. Takano had become acquainted with her during this time, frequently visiting the restaurant where she worked from the summer of 2022 onward.
The stabbing occurred around 9:50 a.m. while Sato was livestreaming. Security footage suggests that Takano assaulted her with numerous stabs to the head, neck, and chest. Despite immediate medical attention, Sato was pronounced dead shortly after her arrival at the hospital. Takano further revealed that he had seen Sato’s livestream announcement, traveled to Tokyo that morning, and located her by viewing the broadcast, ultimately ambushing her while she walked alone.
