In a distressing incident in Mathura, a man named Umesh, aged 28, is alleged to have set his married lover, Rekha (30), on fire after she declined to leave her family for him. The event unfolded in Rekha’s home, where she was alone while her children were at school and her husband was working. Responding to Rekha’s screams, neighbors rushed to her aid, while Umesh attempted to flee by jumping from her terrace, resulting in serious injuries to himself.
Umesh, from Hasanpur village in Haryana, disguised himself as a woman wearing a lehenga. He reportedly arrived at Rekha’s house with a petrol bottle to pressure her into leaving with him. When she resisted, he poured the petrol on her and ignited it. Both individuals have since been admitted to SN Medical College in Agra, with Rekha suffering severe burns—more than 70 percent of her body affected, as stated by police officials.
Police claimed Umesh had previously been a frequently visiting presence in Rekha’s life, and their relationship had developed over time. Rekha had previously eloped with Umesh in August of the previous year; however, her family had reported her missing, and she was eventually returned home in February after being located in Himachal Pradesh. Following this history, Rekha had distanced herself from Umesh, realizing her earlier mistake. Upon her refusal to revisit their relationship, Umesh’s violent reaction was triggered.
Although no formal complaint regarding the attack has been filed yet, police emphasized that their primary focus at this time remains on the health and recovery of both victims. Once a complaint is officially registered, legal proceedings will ensue in accordance with the law.
