In Washington, US President Donald Trump’s special envoy, Steve Witkoff, announced plans to facilitate discussions with Ukraine aimed at establishing a peace agreement framework to conclude the hostilities with Russia. Witkoff confirmed coordination efforts are underway for a meeting next week in Saudi Arabia, either in Riyadh or Jeddah. This follows recent negotiations between the United States and Ukraine concerning a revenue-sharing minerals deal after earlier contentious talks on February 28.

During a recent address to Congress, President Trump indicated that Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky is willing to engage in negotiations at the earliest opportunity. Witkoff further elaborated on the meeting in Saudi Arabia by stating, “I think the idea is to get down a framework for a peace agreement and an initial ceasefire as well.”

Separately, in Riyadh, the King Salman International Academy for the Arabic Language revealed that its fourth annual international conference on lexicography would commence in October 2025. This conference, themed “The Global Lexicography Industry: Experiences, Efforts, and Prospects,” aims to enhance collaboration amongst global linguistic institutions while focusing on innovations in dictionary development through emerging technologies.

The event will gather experts who will share insights regarding successful lexicographic initiatives. Abdullah bin Saleh Al-Washmi, secretary-general of the academy, remarked that the conference aims to prompt discussion around key challenges and advancements, with representatives from over 20 nations anticipated to attend.

In Jeddah, the Water Taxi project was officially launched, connecting vital areas including the Jeddah Yacht Club, historic Al-Balad, and Obhur. Mayor Saleh Al-Turki noted the initiative reflects the Kingdom’s commitment to improving transportation infrastructure and enhancing the tourism sector as part of Vision 2030 initiatives. The project aims to improve marine mobility, with two boats operational and an app available for passengers to utilize the water taxi service.

In a humanitarian initiative, Saudi Arabia’s Ministry of Islamic Affairs unveiled programs distributing dates and iftar meals in Indonesia, Albania, and Jordan. The initiative aims to benefit thousands during Ramadan, highlighting Saudi Arabia’s commitment to charitable outreach. The ceremonies underscore significant humanitarian efforts, with aid directed towards orphanages, charitable associations, and refugee camps this Ramadan.

Tawakkalna, the acclaimed Saudi app, is enhancing worship services during Ramadan, providing users with Qur’an reading tools, prayer times, and the ability to obtain permits for Umrah. This app features over 650 government services aimed at improving quality of life as part of Saudi Vision 2030. Additionally, the General Authority for the Care of the Grand Mosque has launched a trial service for pilgrims to exit the state of Ihram after completing their rituals, thus enhancing their overall Umrah experience.

The new hair cutting service at five designated locations within the Grand Mosque ensures that pilgrims can transition out of Ihram seamlessly. Religious experts have praised the service, emphasizing its convenience and adherence to traditions, further enriching the spiritual journey of pilgrims participating in Umrah activities.

This comprehensive overview highlights several significant developments occurring within Saudi Arabia and its international relations. The establishment of peace talks between the U.S. and Ukraine demonstrates ongoing diplomatic efforts to resolve conflict. Meanwhile, initiatives enhancing cultural and transportation services reflect Saudi Arabia’s commitment to improving infrastructure and supporting global engagement. Furthermore, charitable outreach during Ramadan showcases the nation’s dedication to humanitarian assistance, and advancements in technology, such as the Tawakkalna app and designated services for pilgrims, indicate a focus on enhancing the worship experience. Overall, these events illustrate Saudi Arabia’s strategic alignment with Vision 2030, aimed at fostering growth and modernization across various sectors.
