In February, a case of triple murders in Kolkata revealed shocking details involving a suicide pact among family members, culminating from substantial debts of Rs 16 crore. Prasun Dey confessed to the murders of his wife, daughter, and sister-in-law after their attempt to end their lives failed. His arrest followed hours of interrogation and the incident highlights the dire consequences of financial strain within families.
On February 19, a harrowing case emerged in Tangra, Kolkata, involving the tragic deaths of three family members. Initial news broke when two brothers and one of their sons crashed their vehicle into a pillar, allegedly in a suicide attempt. Upon being interrogated in the hospital, they revealed the existence of deceased bodies at their residence. Subsequently, one brother, Prasun Dey, confessed to murdering his wife, daughter, and sister-in-law due to overwhelming financial pressures.
Prasun Dey’s revelations outlined that the family was grappling with a staggering debt of Rs 16 crore. The brothers, Pranay and Prasun Dey, along with their families, had been living together, consisting of two wives and their two children. The gargantuan debt reportedly catalyzed a suicide pact among the family members, which tragically resulted in murder instead.
According to sources, on February 17, the family had consumed a mixture of ‘payesh’ (rice pudding) and sleeping pills, expecting to die. However, they all survived and subsequently devised a ‘Plan B.’ It was then that Prasun Dey, with the assistance of his wife, initiated a series of murders. He first smothered his daughter before turning to his wife, Romi, and sister-in-law with lethal force.
After carrying out these horrific acts, Prasun Dey, accompanied by his brother and nephew, fled the scene. Their vehicle eventually crashed after 3 AM, which they claimed was intended as a final act to end their lives. The police are continuing their investigation, focusing on Pranay Dey, who remains hospitalized following the incident and has yet to provide his statement.
The debts incurred included significant amounts for the EMIs of their vehicles, amounting to Rs 47 lakh for two of the three cars. Following hours of intensive questioning, Prasun Dey was arrested by law enforcement and subsequently brought before a court, which remanded him to police custody until March 6.
The circumstances surrounding this tragic incident highlight the severe impact of financial distress on family dynamics, leading to devastating outcomes. The case remains under investigation, focusing particularly on the roles of Prasun and Pranay Dey. As authorities explore the implications of mental health and financial burdens, this incident serves as a stark reminder of the complexities of familial relationships amid crisis.
