The Japan Meteorological Agency reports that a combination of a rain front and cold air resulted in snowfall primarily affecting eastern and northern Japan on Monday, including central Tokyo. A low-pressure system is forecasted to move eastward along the front that stretches over the southern coastline of Honshu.
Heavy snow is forecasted for the Kanto-Koshin region, Shizuoka Prefecture, and the Pacific coast areas of the Tohoku region from Tuesday evening through Wednesday. Snowfall may reach considerable levels, even impacting flatlands within the Kanto-Koshin area.
In terms of accumulation, areas along the Pacific coast in Tohoku’s mountainous regions may receive up to 30 centimeters of snow by Wednesday morning. Further, low-lying regions in Tohoku and the Shizuoka mountains may see 20 centimeters, while parts of the Kanto region such as Hakone to Tama and Chichibu could accumulate the same amount.
Flatlands in northern Kanto may experience up to 15 centimeters, and southern Kanto flatlands could observe around 10 centimeters. Specifically, Tokyo’s 23 wards are expected to receive approximately 3 centimeters of snowfall. Authorities are urging residents to exercise caution regarding potential traffic disruptions and icy road conditions.
