Tragic Nunchuck Attack Claims Life of Class 10 Kerala Student

Muhammed Shahabas, a 15-year-old student from Kerala, died from head injuries sustained in a nunchuck-related attack by fellow students during a farewell party. Despite seeking initial treatment, his condition worsened and he was eventually hospitalized in a coma before his death. Authorities have detained five classmates involved in the incident and an inquiry has been initiated by the education minister.

A tragic incident occurred in Thamarassery, Kerala, resulting in the death of a 15-year-old student, Muhammed Shahabas, who succumbed to severe head injuries after an altercation involving a nunchuck, a martial arts weapon. The confrontation took place on Thursday near a private tuition center. Shahabas was a Class 10 student at MJ Higher Secondary School and had been receiving treatment at Kozhikode Government Medical College Hospital prior to his death.

Kozhikode Rural Superintendent of Police KE Baiju reported that authorities have registered a murder case against five Class 10 students from the Government Vocational Higher Secondary School in connection with the incident. Initial investigations suggest the conflict escalated during a farewell party, leading to physical violence around 5 PM on February 23.

Following the assault, Shahabas fled to a nearby mall instead of going directly home. He accepted a ride on a motorcycle but, despite his deteriorating condition and vomiting on the bike, he did not seek medical attention immediately. He subsequently stayed at a friend’s house before returning to his home.

As his condition worsened, he was first admitted to Thamarassery Taluk Hospital, where the severity of his injuries was not initially recognized. However, he was eventually transferred to Kozhikode Medical College Hospital, where he remained in a coma until he passed away. The five students involved in the incident are now in custody and will be presented to the Juvenile Justice Board. Additionally, the General Education Minister V Sivankutty has called for a departmental inquiry into the matter.

In conclusion, the death of Muhammed Shahabas has highlighted severe issues related to student violence and the accessibility of proper medical treatment in emergency situations. The investigation into this tragic case continues as authorities work to address the circumstances surrounding the altercation and implement measures to ensure student safety. The community mourns the loss of a young life, emphasizing the urgent need for preventative actions against such incidents.
