Wärtsilä to Equip Kazakhstan’s New 120 MW Hybrid Power Plant

Wärtsilä has secured an order to supply equipment for a 120 MW power plant in Kazakhstan, featuring six gas-fueled engines. The project, led by Kazakhstan Caspian Offshore Industries, will also include additional renewable sources, supporting the region’s oil and gas facilities. Expected completion is by mid-2026, marking Kazakhstan’s first hybrid power project.

Wärtsilä is set to supply engineered equipment for a new 120 MW power plant currently being constructed in Kazakhstan. The order, placed by Kazakhstan Caspian Offshore Industries (KCOI), includes six Wärtsilä 46TS-SG gas-fueled engines along with essential mechanical and electrical auxiliary equipment. This order was recorded in Q4 2024.

KCOI is spearheading the development of a significant hybrid energy project in the Mangystau region, which will feature a power plant of 120 MW, complemented by a 77 MW wind farm and a 50 MW solar plant. The combined capacity aims to provide electricity to oil and gas operations in the region. The rapid response capabilities of Wärtsilä engines will help balance the variability of renewable energy generation.

Mirko Borghesi, CEO of KCOI, stated, “This will be the first hybrid project of its type to be implemented in Kazakhstan. The engine power plant is essential to enable a stable and reliable supply of electricity, and the Wärtsilä engines will efficiently regulate the frequency and voltage to ensure this reliability is achieved.”

Delivery of the Wärtsilä equipment is anticipated by late 2025, with full operational capability expected by mid-2026. Kenneth Engblom, Vice President of Wärtsilä Energy for Africa and Europe, expressed pride in contributing to a major hybrid power initiative supporting Kazakhstan’s shift toward decarbonized energy production, emphasizing the critical need for grid balancing capabilities to accommodate renewable energy sources.
